10 Things Only Digital Illustrators Will Understand

As a digital illustrator, you’ve probably encountered situations that sound completely foreign to outsiders, but are everyday occurrences for us. Here are ten relatable situations that only we will truly understand:

10 Things Only Digital Illustrators Will Understand10 Things Only Digital Illustrators Will Understand

1. The Lost Layer

"Where did that line go!?" You're working hard, but suddenly an important detail of your illustration seems to have disappeared. After a long search, you realize that it's on the wrong layer or that you accidentally worked on the wrong one. A classic.

2. The infinite undo ability

Thanks to the undo button (Ctrl+Z) you have infinite control. In real life you try to fix your mistakes the same way, like knocking over a cup of tea or tripping. Oh no, it doesn't work.

3. The accuracy of the zoom tool

You zoom in so far on your work that you are literally counting pixels. From a distance everything looks great, but once you zoom in you suddenly notice a tiny mistake that no one would ever see… except you.

4. The pen that suddenly takes on a life of its own

You're busy and suddenly your pen or mouse doesn't work as it should. Either it draws without you touching it, or it doesn't respond at all. You nervously start checking all the settings, restart the program, and even consider giving the pen a stern talking to for a moment. After some fiddling around, it works again as if nothing had ever happened. Phew.

5. “Is that your job or your hobby?”

Everyone wonders when you tell them you are a digital illustrator. People often think you are just drawing for fun, while they have no idea how much work goes into your creations.

6. The dependence on shortcuts

Your fingers know exactly where every hotkey is, to the point that you could press them in your sleep. When you suddenly have to work on another computer with no hotkeys, it feels like you've lost your memory.

7. The unintended artworks by lag

That moment when your computer suddenly starts to glitch during a complex illustration, and your brush strokes appear on the screen in slow motion. Sometimes you accidentally create art with those glitchy lines.

8. “Can you draw that quickly?”

Anyone who doesn't understand what digital art is all about thinks that you can conjure something up in five minutes. They have no idea that even a simple drawing can take hours if you want to do it right.

9. The “Oh no, I haven't saved yet” panic attack

You’re totally in the flow, hyper-focused, creating your masterpiece… and suddenly you realize you haven’t saved anything in the last three hours. That mini heart attack triggers an immediate reflex: Ctrl+S, Ctrl+S, Ctrl+S .

10. Always looking for the perfect brush

Even though you have a hundred brushes, you always keep searching for that one perfect brush that is just a little bit better. The ideal mix of texture, flow and shape… it exists somewhere, right?

Every digital illustrator will recognize these situations right away. They are part of the frustrations and magical moments that make our creative process unique. And the best part? It’s an adventure every time!
